Sadurni Acoustics “Staccato” project aroused enthusiasm and astonishment in our expert listening panel from the onset. A number of horns were carefully calculated, constructed and listened to by themselves and as a system looking for the perfect combination. Several designs of horns and drivers were presented and discarded in order to achieve the final topology-perfect integration of tone and texture with minimal signal loss. It is a solution brought on from a long and complex procedure, a quest for the right horn size and loading for each frequency range masterfully executed in such a way that would simplify the most complicated process: the transition from one transducer to the next.
In order to achieve an emblematic execution, the best methods of amplification and channel crossing were tested. Formidable results were achieved with active crossovers, being a little heavy with multiple stages of amplification. Passive crossovers at line level were clean sounding, but impedance problems arise.
Our expert panel came to realize through extended listening tests, with state of the art equipment, that speaker level crossovers, when uncompromisingly executed, bring out a most harmonious detailed sound and texture that take away nothing from the best line level crossovers, causing less damage to the delicate line signals. So the Staccato speaker level crossovers were constructed with multi amplification in mind for unparalleled performance.
Our horns are made from layered MDF with thickness up to 3 inches. Our favored profile is Tactrix which we find bring more tone and openness to the delicate mid range frequencies.
The lower midrange horn is 92 cm in diameter and will achieve 100 hertz in room frequency response; room dependant. We find this frequency to bring the best sound attributes, most fundamental frequencies of the voice response fit into this range, so a fullness of voice and most other instruments is achieved with it. Careful steps were taken to assure the output of this combination of driver and horn, given a specific loading, to be perfectly matched to the compression driver and tweeter allowing us to get rid of resistors anywhere on our circuit. Another big advantage sprung from the design of this horn is its decay, the natural roll of is in perfect combination with our next channel, allowing for a simpler crossing circuit bringing a more direct response and detailed sound of this most important range.
Our turbine horn gets its name from the aerodynamic shape that has been designed into it in order to make it most transparent acoustically to the surrounding channels for better imaging. This shape also allow us to move the horn back and forward flat on top of our acoustical support, leaving open all possibilities for time alignment, which is so important for a perfect reproduction of the recorded material.
We were able to choose our drivers among the best available, several top of the line drivers from most manufacturers were tested on horns made specifically for them, according to their best attributes and tone. Extensive listening tests were performed over a long period of time to cherry pick a few favorite ones. These were then tested with the surrounding channels in order to achieve the best tonal integration. Both the midrange Compression driver and the horn loaded cone driver for the lower midrange bear some of the most powerful magnetic structures available and are capable of either the most timbre subtleties with the most appealing nuances, or the highest transients with no sign of distortion.
The tweeter was the last ingredient to be mixed in. We tested most of the high efficiency drivers available, in most topologies possible; from silk dome arrays to huge Ribbon tweeters from various manufacturers. The tweeter we chose was an immediate decision, as soon as it started playing everything fell into place, the tonal impact and roundness of the system sprung right out, like when you open a bottle of great wine and get the first whiff out of the cork, one immediately knows it will perform perfectly when properly oxygenated.
The Set up
Staccato Horn is a system that can work with only one amplifier for the midrange satellite and a bass amp. A line level Subwoofer crossover is included; Careful design was made in order to have a perfect resolution out of one amplifier for the 3 midrange horns: Tweeter, Turbine Mid Horn and Upper Bass Horn. We recommend this amplifier to have an output of 1.5 watts or more: we had great results with SS amps putting out 300 watts! If big orchestral music is preferred, the minimum amplifier required would be 3 watts. Our favorite amplifier puts out 3.5 watts. Just connect your amplifier to the mid Input binding posts on the bottom of the Upper Bass Horn: jumpers should be placed from there to the low and high binding posts.
For easy connection and to avoid multiple wiring on your audio room an amplifier support has been built into the lower support of the Staccato horn. Any 9 inches wide amplifier can fit perfectly having just one signal cable going to your speakers, and speaker cable jumpers out to the nearby speaker terminals. Depending on the Bass module selected different power amplifiers can be used for bass; we recommend no less than 60 watts per channel.
Important: The two cables included have to be connected from the output binding posts on top of the Upper Bass Horn to the Turbine Horn and the tweeter.
According to your taste and knowledge more amplifiers can be used for an even increasing clarity in resolution and dynamic contrast.
Repeated Amplifiers will need no further volume control.
If different amplifiers are used careful volume matching must be performed.
Active line level Crossovers can be used to increase crossing level: we recommend leaving the original crossovers and allow the line level crossover to perform a steeper crossing curve, at the same Xover points. If absolutely needed direct connection to the midrange horn and tweeters is possible. This way the Staccato Horn offers enormous possibilities of connection and performance for the novice owners and for expert listeners as well.
